118. Trailer Bearings

Trailer Bearings for all types of boat trailers - both tapered roller and ball bearings. The most popular bearings fitted to trailers are Tapered Roller Bearings. They come as two separate parts called the cup and cone. Some are supplied with a seal built in as an integral part of the bearing cone. Most bearings are stamped with an identification number by the manufacturer, If there are no numbers then the bearing can be identified by its dimensions - try typing the sizes in the search box. The most common bearings used on boat trailers are L44643 - L44610 and L44643L - L44610 Bearing number L44643 refers to the bearing cone without built in seal as shown on the left in both pictures. Bearing number L44643 L refers to the bearing cone with built in seal as shown on the right in both pictures. The same cup is used for both having the number L44610. 119. Cold Forging

Cold forging is a high speed manufacturing process whereby metal is shaped at room temperature often without the need for the removal of material. A simple blank is placed within a die and a punch is pressed into the blank. The blank then takes on the form of the punch and the die. By utilising multiple dies and punches in succession very complex shapes can be achieved. Metal is forced beyond its yield (elastic) limit and retains its altered shape upon removal from the die. The metal is not forced beyond its tensile strength, otherwise fracturing would occur (the exception is when trimming or piercing). Historically cold forming has been an experienced based technology, but this is changing as new computer based analytical tools are constantly being developed.

120. Axle Bearings

Because axle shafts are typically made of softer steel than bearing rollers, shafts have a tendency to wear out before the bearing. The rollers can actually wear away a section of the shaft, as shown in the below diagram. Automotive cylindrical axle repair bearings are designed to replace the original bearings and seals on axles that are still in good condition, but whose original bearing and/or seal contact paths are not suitable for continued use. The extra-wide bearing repositions the rollers and seal to ride on unworn portions of the axle closer to the flange. Lubrication is accomplished through the axle tube by differential fluid, just like the OE design.
