If you have plastic core scooter wheels then fitting the bearings is very straight forward as they typically can be pushed in by hand without issue. Fitting scooter bearings into Metal core wheels is a little trickier as they are designed to be a tight fit so pushing them in by hand rarely works. In our workshop we used to use a vise to gently squeeze them in, but now we use a hammer!! Apply a small amount of grease to the edges of each bearing you are going to install. Apply a small amount of grease to the inside hole on the scooter wheel where the bearings are going to be fitted. Place the bearing over the hole in the wheel and try and make sure that it is straight/level as possible. Place either a block of wood or an old paperback book over the top of the bearing and gently strike this with the hammer (Important - do not strike the bearing directly with the hammer). When the bearing has been hammered in fully into the hole in the middle of your wheel it should sit flush with the edge of the wheel Turn the wheel over and insert the bearing spacer (you will need a bearing spacer, if you do not use one your wheel will not spin when you do your axles up securely!)

So how do you know if you need new drum bearings? Well one customer described it sounding like a concrete mixer on overdrive; it can make a real racket if the drum bearings have gone. The other thing is to look for the amount of movement between the drum and the outer tube. Now the bearings on this machine are fine, you can see there is no real movement there. But if your bearings have gone, the inner drum will move a lot in relation to the outer tub. You may find that for your make and model you do need to buy them separately, but do buy all three as we want to replace the lot. Now this is a big job, not for the feint hearted , you are going to need a little bit of space to work in, but it's going to save you a fortune compared with buying a new machine or calling out an engineer. A thrust bearing is a particular type of rotary bearing. Like other bearings they permit rotation between parts, but they are designed to support a high axial load while doing this. Thrust bearings come in several varieties. Thrust ball bearings, composed of ball bearings supported in a ring, can be used in low thrust applications where there is little axial load. Spherical roller thrust bearings consists of two rings and asymmetrical rollers of spherical shape. They can accommodate combined radial and axial loads and also accommodate misalignment of the shafts. They are often used together with radial spherical roller bearings. Fluid bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a thin layer of pressurized liquid, these give low drag. Magnetic bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a magnetic field. This is used where very high speeds or very low drag is needed, for example the Zippe-type centrifuge. They are commonly used in automotive, marine, and aerospace applications. Thrust bearings are used in cars because the forward gears in modern car gearboxes use helical gears which, while aiding in smoothness and noise reduction, cause axial forces that need to be dealt with. A rolling-element bearing, also known as a rolling bearing, is a bearing which carries a load by placing round elements between two bearing rings. The relative motion of the pieces causes the round elements to roll with very little rolling resistance and with little sliding. One of the earliest and best-known rolling-element bearings are sets of logs laid on the ground with a large stone block on top. As the stone is pulled, the logs roll along the ground with little sliding friction. As each log comes out the back, it is moved to the front where the block then rolls on to it. It is possible to imitate such a bearing by placing several pens or pencils on a table and placing an item on top of them. See "bearings" for more on the historical development of bearings. A rolling element rotary bearing uses a shaft in a much larger hole, and cylinders called "rollers" tightly fill the space between the shaft and hole. As the shaft turns, each roller acts as the logs in the above example. However, since the bearing is round, the rollers never fall out from under the load.
