8. Roll Forging
Roll forging is a process where round or flat bar stock is reduced in thickness and increased in length. Roll forging is performed using two cylindrical or semi-cylindrical rolls, each containing one or more shaped grooves. A heated bar is inserted into the rolls and when it hits a stop the rolls rotate and the bar is progressively shaped as it is rolled through the machine. The piece is then transferred to the next set of grooves or turned around and reinserted into the same grooves. This continues until the desired shape and size is achieved. If you have plastic core scooter wheels then fitting the bearings is very straight forward as they typically can be pushed in by hand without issue. Fitting scooter bearings into Metal core wheels is a little trickier as they are designed to be a tight fit so pushing them in by hand rarely works. In our workshop we used to use a vise to gently squeeze them in, but now we use a hammer!! Apply a small amount of grease to the edges of each bearing you are going to install. Apply a small amount of grease to the inside hole on the scooter wheel where the bearings are going to be fitted. Place the bearing over the hole in the wheel and try and make sure that it is straight/level as possible. Place either a block of wood or an old paperback book over the top of the bearing and gently strike this with the hammer (Important - do not strike the bearing directly with the hammer). When the bearing has been hammered in fully into the hole in the middle of your wheel it should sit flush with the edge of the wheel Turn the wheel over and insert the bearing spacer (you will need a bearing spacer, if you do not use one your wheel will not spin when you do your axles up securely!)

Sealed bearings. A selection of SKF spherical roller bearings is also produced in a sealed version with contact seals on both sides. The seals are reinforced with sheet steel and made of an oil and wear-resistant: acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), designation suffix 2CS; hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR), designation suffix 2CS5; fluoro rubber (FKM), designation suffix 2CS2. The seals have two sealing lips contacting the lead-in at the sides of the inner ring raceway, to provide efficient sealing. Sealed bearings are lubricated as standard with an extreme pressure bearing grease according to table 1. They should not be heated to temperatures above 80°C during mounting, and should not be washed. Sealed bearings do not need to be relubricated when the operating temperature does not exceed 70°C and the rotational speed is below 50% of the limiting speed listed in the product table. When temperature and/or speeds are high, relubrication with a similar grease with lithium thickener is recommended. In this case the polymer band, which covers the lubrication holes in the outer ring must be removed before mounting. Note that only a small amount of grease is needed to relubricate sealed bearings. The grease should be pressed in slowly through the lubrication holes in the outer ring while the bearing is rotating. Excessive pressure should be avoided so as not to damage the seals. The internal design of a sealed bearing corresponds to that of an open bearing. The external dimensions are also the same except for bearings based on the 222 and 223 series. These bearings are slightly wider and carry the series designation BS2-22 and BS2-23 respectively. Sealed bearings are available with a cylindrical bore as standard. However most bearings in the BS2-22 series are available with a tapered bore as well. Every sealed bearing can be supplied with a tapered bore to special order. To prevent interference with the seal, the diameter of the shaft abutment should not exceed damax at least for the 1 to 2 mm closest to the bearing. If the bearings are secured axially on the shaft by a lock nut, SKF recommends using a KMFE lock nut or to position an intermediate ring between the bearing and the lock nut.

Roll forging is a process where round or flat bar stock is reduced in thickness and increased in length. Roll forging is performed using two cylindrical or semi-cylindrical rolls, each containing one or more shaped grooves. A heated bar is inserted into the rolls and when it hits a stop the rolls rotate and the bar is progressively shaped as it is rolled through the machine. The piece is then transferred to the next set of grooves or turned around and reinserted into the same grooves. This continues until the desired shape and size is achieved. The advantage of this process is there is no flash and it imparts a favorable grain structure into the workpiece. Tapered roller bearings are bearings that can take large axial forces (i.e., they are good thrust bearings) as well as being able to sustain large radial forces. The inner and outer ring raceways are segments of cones and the rollers are also made with a taper so that the conical surfaces of the raceways and the roller axes if projected, would all meet at a common point on the main axis of the bearing. When a roller slides rather than rolls, it can generate wear at the roller-to-race interface, i.e. the differences in surface speeds creates a scrubbing action. Wear will degenerate the close tolerances normally held in the bearing and can lead to other problems. Much closer to pure rolling can be achieved in a tapered roller bearing and this avoids rapid wear. The rollers are guided by a flange on the inner ring. This stops the rollers from sliding out at high speed due to their momentum. The larger the half angles of these cones the larger the axial force that the bearing can sustain. Tapered roller bearings are separable and have the following components: outer ring, inner ring, and roller assembly (containing the rollers and a cage). The non-separable inner ring and roller assembly is called the cone, and the outer ring is called the cup. Internal clearance is established during mounting by the axial position of the cone relative to the cup.
