8. Cold Forming

Cold forging is a high speed manufacturing process whereby metal is shaped at room temperature often without the need for the removal of material. A simple blank is placed within a die and a punch is pressed into the blank. The blank then takes on the form of the punch and the die. By utilising multiple dies and punches in succession very complex shapes can be achieved. Metal is forced beyond its yield (elastic) limit and retains its altered shape upon removal from the die. How to measure a bearing. Sometimes you may need to identify a bearing due to general wear and tear. Most bearing references now are laser stamped but these wear and rub off more quickly than the previous method, which was engraved deep in the bearing's metal. Bearing Sizes. 21. Scooter Bearings

If you have plastic core scooter wheels then fitting the bearings is very straight forward as they typically can be pushed in by hand without issue. Fitting scooter bearings into Metal core wheels is a little trickier as they are designed to be a tight fit so pushing them in by hand rarely works. In our workshop we used to use a vise to gently squeeze them in, but now we use a hammer!! Apply a small amount of grease to the edges of each bearing you are going to install. Apply a small amount of grease to the inside hole on the scooter wheel where the bearings are going to be fitted. Place the bearing over the hole in the wheel and try and make sure that it is straight/level as possible. Place either a block of wood or an old paperback book over the top of the bearing and gently strike this with the hammer (Important - do not strike the bearing directly with the hammer). When the bearing has been hammered in fully into the hole in the middle of your wheel it should sit flush with the edge of the wheel Turn the wheel over and insert the bearing spacer (you will need a bearing spacer, if you do not use one your wheel will not spin when you do your axles up securely!)

The press forging operation can be done either cold or hot. The main advantage of press forging, as compared to drop-hammer forging, is its ability to deform the complete workpiece. Drop-hammer forging usually only deforms the surfaces of the workpiece in contact with the hammer and anvil; the interior of the workpiece will stay relatively undeformed. Another advantage to the process includes the knowledge of the new part's strain rate.
